Sri Lankaโ€™s varied landscapes also bring about the perceptions on cultural heritage and experiences in rural village life to the tourists cycling in Sri Lanka. Cycling through rice fields and rural villages; through tea covered hill country, taking the coastal roads of the South Western and southern coastal belt, riding over the cultural triangle studded with monuments, renovated monuments and ruins of ancient Sri Lanka reward all the cycling enthusiasts in invaluable scale and scope.
Though cycling is enjoyed in exploring the island, cyclists should be extra careful in the main roads. The hurtling buses, zig-zagging three wheelers and other motorists could push to the cyclists into tight corners.

Habarana is a popular location among the wildlife enthusiasts and nature tourists. Moreover, Habarana being the central location of the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka, attracts many culture tourists. The irrigation reservoirs and waterways of the area bring in a riverine terrain where the elephants would wade through, or swim to reach the banks in the further end. The ride would take you over the main road, the pathways, villages, jungles, swamp and river.
The best period for Elephant Back Safaris at Habarana is during March to July when the water level of the river is high enough to ride the elephant. From August to November the level of water in the river is low. During December to February when itโ€™s the rainy season at Habarana, the river would flow.

Imagine yourself floating gracefully over the spectacular lands of Sri Lanka with beautiful rivers, magical forests, green mountains and ancient historical sites. Hot air ballooning is a relatively new activity, but itโ€™s gaining more popularity each year. Itโ€™s a unique way to see the country and there are no two routes alike so you are guaranteed to have a unique experience. All the balloons are manufactured in Great Britain and the pilots also train there. During the flight a special ground crew follows the air balloon in jeep and makes sure that everything is alright.
Air ballooning heavily depends on the weather so you canโ€™t book too far in advance. The best time to enjoy this activity is late autumn to early spring. The whole experience lasts for around 4 hours and includes balloon inflation, arrival, briefing, flight, landing, and a short breakfast with champagne and snacks.

Balloon trips are usually scheduled in the morning so you could watch the sunrise in the air. Takeoff starts soon after dawn which is around 6-7 a.m. depending on the season. Itโ€™s best to ask your hotel to arrange a wakeup call so you would wake up on time. Hot air balloon tours are usually all-inclusive and youโ€™ll be provided with an A/C car to transfer and from the point of takeoff. It is definitely a one-of-a-kind experience that shouldnโ€™t be missed.

โ€ข kids under 7 years old and pregnant ladies will not be allowed to take the balloon flight.
โ€ข You are advised to allocate a maximum of 4 hours for your balloon excursion’s ( from pick up to drop off ).
โ€ข Pick up time 4.30, 5am depend on the location.
โ€ข If a flight is cancelled due to bad weather we do not charge and payment is refunded in full case of advance payment.

Kitesurfing

If youโ€™re an adrenaline junkie, kite-surfing is one of the coolest ways to indulge yourself in Sri Lanka โ€“ and if youโ€™re going to give it a try, Kalpitiya is where you do it.
Kite-surfing is basically strapping yourself to a giant kite, and being dragged on a surfboard over the sea, by the wind. It sounds quite cool and not that complicated, but this is actually an extreme sport with a training period of three days.
There are two kite-surfing stretches in Kalpitiya. One is called Wellai island, and the other is where we went: a thin long Sand Route on the west end of the Kalpitiya lagoon (check our map). On one side of the sand stretch is the lagoon, and on the other edge is the beach.

This is one of the places in Sri Lanka where elephants can be seen in very large numbers. It also rises up to prominence for bird-watchers too , and is also considered as one of the Important Bird Areas in Sri Lanka. Whale watching is one of the most spectacular experiences to have in Sri Lanka. Just imagine these beautiful beings leap gracefully from the sea and swimming right in front of you! Whales are gorgeous mysterious creatures and Sri Lanka is among the best places in the world to watch them in their natural habitat.
Depending on the time of the year, you can go to several places. Mirissa and Trincomalee are considered the best spots to enjoy whale watching. Head to the South Coast of the country to Mirissa where youโ€™ll get a 90% chance to see whales. Itโ€™s the most reliable place on Earth to do this! Mirissa is located between Matara and Galle and is a major tourist spot for all whale lovers.

Most of boat trips start early in the morning so be prepared to rise as early as 6:30 a.m. The whole trip can take from 3 to 5 hours depending on the weather conditions. Itโ€™s best to spend at least one night in Mirissa as youโ€™ll have to rise early and the trip will take at least half of the day.

Head to the Northeast Coast to enjoy whale watching in Trincomalee. Itโ€™s a deep natural harbor that hosts sperm whales during their mating season between June and October. You might need a permit to enter Trincomalee, so you should think ahead and find out whether youโ€™ll need one to avoid surprises. Get ready for the trip and rest before you get up early in the morning. With you take some seasick pills, sun cream and lots of water.
